Etsy Finds: For the love of the Hibou

I don’t know if you have ever heard of Etsy.com but it’s this amazing online marketplace where people with very small businesses can sell their products. They concentrate on all things handmade, vintage or supplies. You can find anything there, people are very creative and they are very grateful with their customers. I once ordered some metal butterflies for my wall, and the man who made them also sent me a pair of earrings that his wife made with a very nice thank you note. The wonderful thing about etsy is that you deal with real people and not huge corporations, and their concept is to bring meaning to the commerce. I want to share with you the amazing things I have found, but I also encourage you to browse the web page, because you never know what amazing things you can discover.

For this first Etsy Finds post, I will express my love for the owls. As you may know already I appreciate the owls for all their symbolic characteristics, here is a post that describes it all.

Charm necklaces featuring owls

1. I love the soft color pallet on this one, and the combination between the metal and the porcelain. The owl is actually a hand-painted ceramic bead, and it comes with Czech and Indian glass beads, gold-tone filigree leaf charms, glass pearl beads and fine gold-tone chain. Get it here

2. This necklace is very boho-chic, it is very interesting because it is finished with a lobster clasp, but holds an unique owl pendant. The owl is antique brass and covered in varying enamel colors. It has a good combination between pastels and dark colors. Get it here

3. Here we have one inspired in Harry potter, but at the same time its is very “wearable” it doesn’t look like a very dorky collector’s item. I like the antique feel it has, it would look very good with dark clothes. Get it here

4. Again, we have another porcelain hand painted owl. But what makes this one very special is that it hangs from a verdigris patina finished leaf branches. And the little Czech pink glass flower is a very delicate detail that makes it very unique. Get it here

That’s all for Owl Charm Necklaces, stay tuned for more Etsy finds. I want to hear your opinions, what did you think about this items? Let me know if you find something amazing on Etsy and you want to share it!

DIY Bulletin Board

Have you ever seen something on the internet that inspires you to do a project, and you think its really easy and that you can certainly do it at home, but you never end up doing it? Well, that happens to me on a daily basis. Months ago I saw a picture on the PB Teen website of a very quirky bulletin board, and I really wanted something like that for my room.

Inspiration:

But this time, I am actually going to do one of those projects, and I’m going to show you step by step how to DIY.

What you’ll need:

· 9 Square corks, any size you want (mine are 1ft x 1ft)

· Different Patterned Fabrics (calculate each to be at least 1 inch on each side larger than the squares)

· Scissors

· Stapler

· Double side tape

Instructions:

1. Get all the materials ready

2. Put a square of cork in the middle of the fabric, and cut the corners.

3. Fold the corners to the back side and staple them to the cork (Make sure you stretch it well).

4. Repeat this with other squares (Don’t do it on all of them).

5. You can improvise with the fabrics. I ran out of fabric so I used a pillow covering for my last pattern.

6. Decide how you want to arrange them on the floor.

7. Put bits of double side tape on the back of each square, on each corner

8. Paste them to the wall, press really hard. Make sure you are putting them straight.

Result:

That’s all! Its super easy, although it does take a little more than an hour to do. Now all you have to do is start personalizing it, pin up anything that you want.

For the Patterns, I designed two of them and then printed it on the fabric. So if you know some graphic design, you can make your own patterns so that its more unique. You can also find patterns in this website: Colour Lovers, it lets you search for patterns according to the colors you want. If you want to use the ones I used, click on them below and you will get them on full resolution. If this is too much complication for you, you can always just buy any fabric you want.

Button Necklaces

My little nieces came to visit, and I decided to organize a fun and different activity (to distract them from wanting to use my iPad all the time). I had some thread and I wanted to make some hand made jewelry, but I didn’t have beads. My mom always keeps all of the extra buttons that come on shirts just in case some one needs them, so she has two little drawers full of them and we never actually use them. I thought it would be fun and creative to make necklaces made of buttons!

It is pretty easy to do, you just pass the thread through 2 of the button holes, put as many buttons as you like, and then tie the ends of the thread. Make sure you made the necklace long enough to fit though your head, or if you want it shorter, use elastic thread.

Here are the results:

I think the girls had a lot of fun (mission accomplished)

The pictures were taken with an iPod, thats why they are very low quality.

What did you think about this little DIY project? Are you going to try it out? Leave me your comments!
